It has been raining here for days thanks to Tropical Storm Debby, so we have had plenty of down time and that means trying to keep the boys busy. These DIY magnetic tic tac toe boards are the perfect rainy day craft. Not only are they fun to make, but the kids can have fun playing together with them when they are done. There are a few steps involved, but really they are super simple and don’t take much time to create.
- Sheet of craft foam
- Round magnets ( you could get away with a smaller and less strong magnet, but we just used what we had.)
- Two different colors of acrylic paint
- Paint brush
- Marker or pencil for tracing
- Empty small tin. (Altoid tins work well, but I used a gift card tin I got from Michael’s.)
Trace the bottom of your tin onto a sheet of craft foam in your color of choice.
Cut out the shape from the craft foam. I cut just inside the traced line so that it would fit snugly inside the tin’s lid.
Press the craft foam into the lid of the tin securely. It should fit perfectly, but if you need to you can use some hot glue to secure it.
Draw your tic tac toe design onto the craft foam with a Sharpie.
Paint the tops of 5 magnets one color and the tops of the other 5 magnets another color. I used black and white, but you can use any colors you like. Let the paint dry.
Once the paint is dry, paint x’s and o’s onto the tops of the magnets in the opposite colors. You can leave the magnets plain if you want, but we wanted to do the traditional x’s and o’s.
Place the pieces on the board within the lid of the tin and enjoy playing. When you are done, the magnets can be stored in the bottom of the tin and it can be closed for easy storage.
